Bjorn Schmelzer & Grand Lavois! Bjorn Schmelzer, a musicologist and renowned authority on folk music in Belgium, a country of ancient music, and Grand Lavois, an elite multinational group of ancient music in Antwerp, led by Schmelzer, have recorded a masterpiece, “Notre-Dame Mass (GCDP 32110)” by Guillaume de Machaut. Schmelzer and the Grand Lavois, who made a big splash with their recording of Guillaume de Machaut’s masterpiece “Notre Dame Mass” (GCDP 32110), present a new recording by Schmelzer and the Grand Lavois featuring two unknown composers active in late 15th century England, Thomas Ashwell (c.1478-c.1527) and John Brown (fl.1527), and their works. Brown (fl.c.1480-1505) wrote music for the Virgin Mary. John Brown was a composer whose birth and death dates and career are largely unknown, and whose name has been preserved by his works in the Eaton Choir Book, a famous manuscript left at
