Influenced by Ravel and Stravinsky, Polish composer Alexander Tansman (1897-1986) was active in France and the United States. While rooted in traditional Polish music, he was approached by Honegger and Milhaud to join the “French Six,” and his diverse style, centered on French modern neoclassicism, has attracted attention in recent years for its originality. Tansman has left numerous works in a variety of genres, from symphonies to guitar pieces and music for stage and film, but the majority of his piano pieces for four hands were written for performance with his wife, Colette Kula (daughter of French composer Jean Kula, who studied under Lazare Lvy and is an active pianist). It was written for Enjoy Tansman’s colorful world, a mix of neoclassical lightness and wartime seriousness, influences from other prominent 20th century composers, as well as entertainment music.
