Description:

The third volume of “Bach & Ysaye” by Antje Weidhaas includes Bach’s “Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin” and “Partita No. 1 for Solo Violin” from his works. From Ysaye’s works, “Sonata for Solo Violin No. 6,” modeled after a baroque partita, and the virtuosic “Sonata for Solo Violin No. 4,” in the Spanish style, are included. Ysaye’s No. 6, dedicated to his Spanish pupil Manuel Quiroga, is an extroverted, flamboyant work in a single movement with a habanera in the middle section. No. 4, dedicated to the virtuoso Fritz Kreisler, consists of dances such as armandos and sarabands, and Weidhaas describes this baroque-style music as “as if seen through an impressionist’s lens. Based on the concept of “discovering Ysae through Bach,” the album consists of Bach’s Sonata No. 3, famous for its long fugue, and Partita No. 1, which includes the Armand and Sarabande, flanked by the Ysae.
