Bach’s monumental magnum opus from his youth, No. 21. Schtz, and the Triple Concerto are also included in this two-disc set! Here comes a fascinating 2-CD set that also includes Schtz’s motet and Bach’s Triple Concerto. The Schtz motet in particular is a favorite of Gardiner’s, who vividly remembers his father singing it to him when he was six years old. In the cantatas, the highlight is the monumental No. 21 in two parts, written in Bach’s youth. The opening Sinfonia is a haunting movement that makes full use of a variety of wordplay and expresses lamentation. The Triple Concerto is similar to Brandenburg’s No. 5, but in a style reminiscent of the pre-classical works of Bach’s sons. CD 1 was recorded live at Saint-Denis Cathedral, and the acoustics and realism further enhance Bach’s world. King International
