This video is a tribute to the great conductor Nikolaus Arnoncourt, who passed away on March 5, 2016. The video was recorded at the Zurich Opera House in 2004 and is the second Fidelio release for Arnoncourt, following a performance released on CD in the 1990s. Arnoncourt originally emerged as a cellist, but he also explored ancient instrumental techniques and founded the Vienna Konzentus Musiks in 1953, which became a pioneer in ancient music orchestras and greatly inspired audiences of the time. While performing Bach and Handel’s works one after another, the orchestra also entered the field of opera, and since the 1970s has made the Zurich Opera House its home, performing numerous operas, starting with baroque operas directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnel and Mozart, each time drawing audiences into a whirlpool of confusion and excitement.
