The “Monday Demonstrations” were held in Leipzig every Monday from 1982 to 1989. This movement started with a few hundred people, but by October 9, 1989, 70,000 people were said to have participated. They left Karl Marxplatz, chanting “Wir sind das Volk! (We are the people!), they marched through the city to protest against the East German government of the time. Miraculously, the demonstration ended peacefully without any bloodshed. Nine days later, Erich Honecker, then President of the Council of State and General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, was ousted from office, and the following month the Berlin Wall fell. It is well known that the conductor Kurt Masur was among the “Leipzig Six” who prepared a “peace message” broadcast over the radio during the October 9 demonstration.
