Featuring Stars of the Early Music World: A Rich Selection of Rare WorksUnlike his other four symphonies, Mendelssohns Symphony No. 2 includes three soloists and a chorus; the composer himself referred to it as a symphonic cantata. It was composed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press, and the lyrics are based on a German translation of the Old Testament. This live recording from concerts held in Bergen, Norway, on April 23 and 24, 2008, features stars of the early music world such as Lamoa and Pregardien, achieving an exquisite effect.
