Mordechai Gebirtig [18771942] was born in the Grand Duchy of Krakw (now part of Poland), which was under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He became a popular composer with a string of hit songs in the 1930s, but he died in June 1942 during the Nazi forced deportation of Krakws Jewish population (the event depicted in the film *Schindlers List*). Every song on this album is deeply moving.The Leipziger Synagogue Choir is a choir with a history spanning more than half a century, founded in 1962.
