The bassoonist Bram van Sambeek, whose series of releases for BIS continues, here takes on an all-Bach programme, playing on the bassoon solo works written for keyboard, flute and cello.The most striking item is the Partita No. 2 in C minor BWV 826, which van Sambeek has arranged himself and multi-tracked as an octet. The impetus, he explains, came from the long months of the pandemic and from his love of ensemble playing: a desire to play beautiful music and real harmony. Multi-tracking is normally done to a metronome or click track, but that creates problems of nuance and phrasing, and welding eight parts into a genuinely rich ensemble is extremely difficult.
