Description:

German opera has a shorter history than Italian or French opera, and Daphne (the score of which has been lost), written by Schtz in the first half of the 17th century, is considered its first major work. From then on, following Telemann and Haydn, Mozart composed several operas in German, and Beethoven and Weber carried on that tradition. Then came Wagner. Rather than adhering to the established operatic forms of his time, he incorporated leitmotifsmusical motifs that depict the characters and settings of the storyand abandoned the practice of treating each aria as an independent piece, thereby establishing a unique form in which music and singing were more closely integrated.
