Description:

The masterful Gerstein, together with Oramo, tackles a problematic work that will remain in the history of piano concertos. It is technically difficult, has both Italian-like singability and German-like gravity, and even features a male chorus (with German lyrics) based on “Aladdin” in the last movement. The work is long and elusive, incorporating a wide variety of elements. The Boston Symphony Orchestra, which is full of virtuoso players, responded to Sakari Oramo’s clear stickwork with agility, contributing greatly to bringing out the clear contours of the work.
