A project to record horn works by Australian composers has begun. The first volume features chamber music and compiles works from the 20th century. Kellys quartet, written shortly after Australia became a self-governing colony, is a salon-style piece lasting about two and a half minutes. Both Marshall-Hall and Sutherland draw on the Romantic tradition, while Banks incorporates the 12-tone technique; this suggests that these works developed primarily under Western influence. The final piece by Skarsorp is originally a movement from a 1970 work for a rock band, two singers, and an orchestra; the composer later arranged it for a chamber ensemble and subsequently for a horn trio. It is characterized by song-like melodies and a soundscape evoking vast open spaces.
