Scheibe, who grew up in Leipzig and whose father was a friend of Bach’s, moved to Hamburg, where he founded the music review magazine Critical Musician with the support of Telemann and Mattezone. In the magazine, Scheibe criticized Bach’s vocal music mainly from a performance point of view, while praising his keyboard music, and his criticisms, both positive and negative, caused controversy.
