Dimitri Ashkenazy plays Weber and Bruch! Dimitri Ashkenazy, son of the master clarinetist Vladimir Ashkenazy and a world-renowned clarinetist, participates in this romantic concerto album for clarinet and viola. Weber, an important figure of the early Romantic period, has many masterpieces for clarinet, including two concertos and a quintet, but the Concertino, Op. 26, is the first one he wrote, a short but charming work. Often performed with piano accompaniment, the original version with clarinet and orchestra can be heard here. Bruch’s “Double Concerto for Clarinet and Viola” is an impressive work with a warm and moving melody that is typical of his later works, and several themes are based on Swedish melodies. Bruch’s concerto works, including the Romance for viola and orchestra, should be performed more often.
