Born in Liechtenstein and active primarily in Germany, Rheinberger was a renowned composer and educator, famous as a master of organ music; however, he also demonstrated his exceptional talent in a vast number of piano works. His piano sonatas, rooted in traditional Classical and Romantic styles, are characterized by flowing melodies that carry on the tradition of Schubert and Mendelssohn, as well as sophisticated, well-balanced structures and dramatic modulations. Without relying on flashy or superficial effects, they depict an introspective and elegant world. In particular, the Fourth Piano Sonata, Romantic, published during the composers final years amid despair and illness, weaves in material from his earlier works while exuding a more dramatic sense of tension and profound spirituality.
