The Dogma Chamber Orchestra’s fifth Mendelssohn project is finally complete! Mendelssohn composed 12 Sinfonias for strings between the ages of 12 and 14. The Dogma Chamber Orchestra has released a series of Mendelssohn releases including five concertos written during the same period. This is the fifth and final release of this series. The 12 “Sinfonias” were composed to be performed at the weekly Sunday concerts held at Mendelssohn’s home. As the numbers of the “Sinfonias” progress, we can see Mendelssohn’s growth as a composer, including refinements in compositional technique and changes in instrumentation. Since the autograph score of Symphony No. 1 (composed in 1824) is labeled Sinfonia No. 13, these Sinfonias are an important entry point into Mendelssohn’s symphonic oeuvre.
