Saint Catherine was a noblewoman from Alexandria, Egypt, who is believed to have lived around the 4th century. Gifted with many talents, she embraced Christian teachings and was baptized, but this angered the Roman Emperor Maximinus, who forced her to renounce her faith. However, she refused and, because she never renounced her faith, was executed; after her death, she was canonized as a saint. She is the patron saint of many fields, and organizations bearing her name exist all over the world. The Cambridge St. Catherines College Choir, which showcases its magnificent voices on this album, is one such ensemble named after her. This album brings together music in her honor from the 15th and 16th centuries, when the veneration of Saint Catherine reached its peak, and each piece is performed with deep piety and devotion.Naxos Japan
