Without prior knowledge, you may be surprised to hear a deep cello sound, or even a double bass sound. The high register is natural and gentle, and full of deep flavors typical of the contrabass. No one would have thought that Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro would be so well suited to double bass playing. In Brahms, the austerity of the music is even more pronounced. Czech composer Adolf Misiek (1875-1955) was a double bassist born in Modretyn in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now a Czech territory). He studied double bass at the Vienna Conservatory and was a longtime double bassist at the Vienna Court Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
