Description:

The composer Tansman (18971986) was born in Poland and later moved to Paris. After studying in Poland, he emigrated to France. Having left behind the conservative Polish musical scene of the time and influenced by Ravel and Stravinsky, he was able to freely express his creativity and steadily expand his sphere of activity. While in Paris, he became so well-integrated into French society that he was even persuaded to join the French Six (though he reportedly declined); yet he continued to refer to himself as a Polish composer. However, because of his Jewish heritage, he fled persecution and sought asylum in the United States in 1941. Although he returned to Paris after the war, he was unable to adapt to the avant-garde music that was popular at the time, and his creative abilities gradually declined.
