A collection of chamber music works by Jia Dakan (1955), one of Chinas leading contemporary composers. Dakan, best known for his works commissioned for the Silk Road Project launched in 1998 by the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, presents four compositions on this album, each written from a distinct perspective. Flavors of Sichuan, a three-part piece, consists of the first movement, High-Pitched Sounds, characterized by the timbre of the violin; Veins in the Rock, which depicts the gorges found throughout Sichuan, and Mask, inspired by the elaborate makeup used in Peking Opera. This work has been designated by the Chinese government as 20th-Century Chinese Classical Music. Other works include Counterpoint of Times, which applies the Fibonacci sequence, and String Quartet (winner of the 1991 Irino Prize), a contemporary arrangement of traditional folk music.
