The long-awaited first album from Eriko Ara, principal oboe of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. It contains seven works, including a piece commissioned by the player herself, “Fledermaus Hensokyoku”. It opens with Debussy’s famous “Clair de lune”, which seems to set the mood for the whole disc.There is not a great deal of original repertoire for the oboe, but tracks two to four are original works. The second, Kalliwoda’s “Morceau de salon”, is a favourite that oboists often take up. Kalliwoda was a Bohemian composer who played the violin in the Prague opera orchestra from the age of twenty-two before serving for forty-three years as court Kapellmeister at Donaueschingen, leaving several hundred works.
