Cage: Five, Seven, ThirteenEssential MusicEssential Music, a New York-based ensemble, has been deeply involved with Cages late works and is recognized as an authority on his music from this period. The works included here were recorded in 199394 and, with one exception, are being released for the first time.Cages late worksthe Number Pieces and Time Bracket piecesbegan with the first composition written in 1987. In the Number Pieces, the title refers to the number of musicians performing the piece. Although the scores consist of several parts, they are not fully realized; while they provide general instructions, they are characterized by a high degree of freedom (a time bracket) that allows musicians to determine the start, end, and duration of the performance at their own discretion. Thirteen is Cages final work. This is not the first recording of this piece, but the second. *Five* does not
