Eugene Ormandy

Description:

Ormandy was a master conductor from Hungary. He became music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1938 and, from that time on, delivered legendary performances with the orchestra. Sibeliuss Symphony No. 2, a work by Finlands leading composer, was a piece Ormandy particularly enjoyed performing and for which he received high acclaim. It is said that Sibelius himself praised Ormandys performance highly. The powerful performance by Oistrakh (violin) on this recording also became a celebrated masterpiece, regarded as a historic recording.
