From Iceland, a hub of contemporary music, comes a complete recording of the symphonies Arvo Prt had completed by 2026!Prts Symphony No. 1, written in 1963 shortly after his graduation from the Tallinn Conservatory, features a two-movement structure in the Baroque stylea Canon and a Prelude and Fugueyet its harmony is extremely avant-garde, strongly evoking the influence of the twelve-tone technique. In his Symphony No. 2 from 1966, he adopted serialism, unfolding complex textures reminiscent of the Polish school, such as Penderecki. Symphony No. 3, written in 1971, reflects the results of Prts research into Gregorian chant and medieval polyphonic music, to which he devoted himself in the late 1960s, and exhibits a transitional character leading toward his later tintinnabuli style.
