Born in 1923, Ned Lorem (1923) is primarily known as a composer of art songs, but he has also written works for the flute throughout nearly his entire career. This collection features many of these captivating pieces. Having lived in France during his youth, the influence of Poulenc, Ravel, and Roussel is strongly felt in Lorems early works. From Mountain Songwhich seems to blend that modern sensibility with Kentucky folk music (this was his first piece for instruments, written for oboe, violin, cello), to the 2006 Four Prayers, Lorems lyrical sensibilitymatured over the course of some 50 yearsresonates with both beauty and melancholy.
