During the monarchy, he worked as a church organist. At the age of 34, he was appointed principal organist at the chapel of the Royal Military Academy in Paris, a position he held for approximately 14 years until 1786, when, at the age of 48, he resigned due to poor health; he was granted a lifetime pension by King Louis XVI. Taplay Survives the Revolution: However, when the French Revolution broke out three years later, his pension was revoked. Taplay continued to work as a musicianperforming, composing, teaching, and publishingprimarily in Paris, and survived for 33 years after the Revolution before passing away in 1822 at the age of 84 in the suburbs of Paris.
