Joseph Laboa, an Austrian Romantic composer. Although his works are rarely heard today, during his lifetime he was a highly regarded musicianboth as a composer and an educatorwho overcame the challenge of blindness caused by smallpox, which he contracted as a child. He was also close friends with Paul Wittgenstein, a pianist who lost his right hand in the war and was one of his students; it is well known that most of Laboeufs works were published thanks to the support of the wealthy Wittgenstein family. Supported by fresh, vibrant harmonies, Laboas works exude a calm atmosphere that hints at the influence of Brahms.
