This album of important “fantasias” from around Europe written for the lute in the 16th century is a surprisingly rare project. Francesca Torelli, a female Italian player who studied under the master Nigel North at London’s Guildhall School of Music, has taken on the role of a Renaissance lute player, skillfully expressing through the form of “fantasia” the spirit of musicians, composers, and the transitional period into the next era known as the Baroque.
