Lazarevich’s newly discovered manuscripts reveal the subtleties of flute music by an unexpected composer.Under the patronage of Louis XIV, the Sun King, the French Baroque master Marais composed nearly 600 works for the viol (viola da gamba), a bowed string instrument that he himself excelled at playing. He also composed operas and chamber music, and there are many recordings of his works, though not as many as for the viol, but when it comes to works composed by Mallet with the flute as the main instrument (i.e., not arranged), even experts were completely unaware of their existence. In 2023, however, two 18th century manuscripts for flute surfaced. They contain a number of flute works that bear the Malle name, but for which no original works have been found in his known viol repertoire.
