Friedrich Gulda (19302000), the Austrian piano virtuoso and composer. His talent effortlessly transcended the boundaries of classical music, leading to mutual influence with numerous musicians and resulting in many collaborative works. In the 1970s, he attempted to transition to a career as a jazz musician, but opposition from those around him prevented this from happening. Instead, he aimed to reconcile classical and jazz music; as part of this effort, he launched the Munich Piano Summer music festival in 1980 as part of his efforts to balance classical and jazz music. He is also known for laying the groundwork for crossover concerts by inviting talented pianists (regardless of genre, of course) and staging high-energy performances.
