This is the fifth installment in Gabriel Feltzs complete Mahler symphony series, whichdespite mixed reviewshas consistently captivated (?) the hearts of his core fans. As usual, the booklet features detailed program notes by Feltz himself, complete with sheet music (with a Japanese translation), and his meticulous analysis of the variations in the third movement, in particular, is reflected in the performance; the transition from the fortissimo at the end of the third movement to the heavenly music of the final movement is one of the highlights of this disc. Throughout the recording, one can sense Feltzs dedication to this work through his delicate tempo changes and the nuanced shading created by variations in dynamics.
