Roger Stvenskys Tavner Akhmatova Requiem Makes a Comeback!The long-awaited return of John Taveners vocal works, previously featured on BBC Radio Classics. The Akhmatova Requiem is a monumental work lasting nearly an hour, based on the poetry of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. Based on poems of resistance written during the 1930s, the era of Stalins reign of terror, its explosive dissonances and dramatic developments are reminiscent of Shostakovich and Schnittke. Perhaps because of this, Rogestvenskys conducting naturally takes on a powerful intensity, resulting in a passionate performance so compelling it could easily be mistaken for a Shostakovich composition. The Six Russian Folk Songs are creative arrangements of Russian folk songs for soprano and a small ensemblea fine piece reminiscent of Berios *Folk Songs*.Tobu Land System
