Born in Moscow, Rogestvensky (1931) is known, among Russian composers, for his particularly masterful interpretations of ballet works. Although he had been active in the West since the late 1970s, Soviet authoritiesfearing he might defectestablished the Soviet Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra and appointed him as its music director in an effort to keep him in the country; this undoubtedly resulted in increased opportunities to introduce works from other nations within the Soviet Union.
