The opera *Don Carlo* is a tale of love and hatred set against the backdrop of the Spanish monarchy, based on Schillers play. Originally composed in five acts in French, it was later translated into Italian and, after several revisions, settled into this 1884 version. The ballet music and the entire first act of the French version were completely cut. The narrative was streamlined, resulting in a highly concentrated and intense story.
