This is what the premiere of Handels The Lord Said looked likea groundbreaking attempt to recreate the performance style of the time at the historic church in Rome where this famous choral work premiered.Georg Friedrich Handel (16851759), one of the most famous composers of the Baroque era alongside Bach, made his international debut in Italy in his twenties. During his three-year stay in Italy, he visited Florence, Venice, Naples, and Rome; while in Rome in 1707, he was commissioned by Cardinal Colonna (16651739) to compose music for the Vespers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This famous Dixit Dominus was premiered on July 16, 1707, at the Church of Santa Maria in Montesanto, and it is believed that Handel himself conducted the work.
