Philip Glass has gradually changed his style since his early days of minimalism, collaborating with many musicians and establishing his own unique style, and now, at over 80 years of age, he has become “an iconic figure of contemporary American music. The “Four Seasons in America” on this album was composed at the suggestion of violinist Robert McDuffie, and is based on Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” and incorporates the spirit of early 18th century Baroque music, accented by a synthesizer that mimics the sound of a harpsichord. The result is a unique work of art. Nevertheless, each movement is not given a definite season, and the listener is free to perceive the seasons from the music, which evokes a variety of landscapes, including calm seas and violent storms. The Violin Sonata was commissioned by architect Martin Murray. The work adopts a retrospective style that is conscious of sonatas by Brahms
