The piccolo stands out prominently in the orchestra; while it plays a key supporting role, it is an instrument for which there are very few solo works. Peter Verhoeven, one of Belgiums leading flutists and piccolists, was born in 1968. He serves as principal piccolist of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and is the founder of the chamber ensemble Arco Valeno. At the same time, as a piccolist, he is dedicated to performing, teaching, and expanding the instruments repertoire. The six pieces included on this album are the latest works dedicated to him by Belgian composers. All are chamber music pieces in which the piccolo reveals a surprisingly diverse range of sounds as it engages in a lively give-and-take with other instruments.
