• Released in 1971, Mwandishi marked a radical shift in Herbie Hancocks artistic directionmoving away from post-bop toward a bold fusion of jazz, funk, free improvisation, and electronic experimentation. Named after Hancocks adopted Swahili name (part of a broader Afrocentric turn in his creative identity), Mwandishi is the first in a groundbreaking trilogy that includes Crossings and Sextant.
