A collection of choral works by Holst, one of the most important British composers of the 20th century. This album collects all of his religious choral works known today, and is performed by the Royal Hospital Chelsea Chapel Choir, a well-known ensemble. Holst is best known for his suite “The Planets,” but he also wrote a great deal of religious music, and left behind a wide variety of works, from originals to arrangements. The “Nunc Dimittis” for the Church of England’s “Evening Prayer” and the rich “Two Psalms and Four Festive Choruses” show the inspiration that Holst must have drawn from the Bible, 16th century music, and the works of J.S. Bach and other composers. The other is an unaccompanied work in eight voices.
