Franz Liszt, a leading pianist and composer of the 19th century. In his youth, he made a name for himself as a virtuoso who masterfully employed extraordinary technical skill, and many of his works were dazzling; however, as he grew older, he gradually began to compose pieces of a more spiritual nature. In his later years, he wrote many religious works and his style evolved toward an impressionistic approach that bordered on atonality. This collection, *Years of Pilgrimage*, brings together pieces he composed intermittently from his twenties through his sixties; one might describe it as a collection of musical essays that parallels his life, which was marked by frequent travel. That said, the First Year and Second Year pieces included on this album were written during a period when he was still full of youthful vigor, and he makes full use of his dazzling technical skills.
