When one hears Tristan, Wagners opera *Tristan und Isolde* immediately comes to mind; the exquisite chord progression heard at the beginning of the prelude to this workcomposed between 1857 and 1859is said to have paved the way for 20th-century music. Inspired by this piece, the contemporary composer Henze created his own Tristan for piano, electronic music tape, and orchestra.
