The kitarrone is a low-pitched instrument of the lute family, characterized by its long neck. Measuring over 160 cm in length and featuring 16 strings, the sound produced by this massive instrument is rich in depth and full of expression. Its acoustic quality is also exceptional. This album compiles works by master musicians from the period between 1604 and 1640, when the kitarrone was at the height of its popularity. The German Johann Kapusberger traveled to Italy, adopted the name Giovanni Kapusperger, and made a name for himself as a master of the kitarrone. While all the pieces are elegant, they also exude a sense of solitude reminiscent of the biwa, striking a chord with Japanese sensibilities.King International
