A Mozart for the twenty-first century, and a prodigy who has captivated no less a figure than Zubin Mehta: Alma Deutscher. Her much-discussed opera “Cinderella”, written when she was just eight years old, is now released on video by Sony Classical.The composer, violinist and pianist Alma Deutscher was born in 2005 in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. Her parents, a university professor and a linguist, are both amateur musicians. At the age of three she was moved by hearing Richard Strauss’s song “Wiegenlied”; by four all kinds of melodies were coming into her head; at five she was writing an opera based on the story of “Don Alonzo”, and at six a piano sonata. She wrote a violin concerto at nine and a piano concerto at twelve, giving the premiere of the latter herself as soloist. She loves Mozart, Schubert and Tchaikovsky, and is also interested in women composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn and Moz
