Jean-Guihen Queyras is by now unquestionably one of the world’s leading cellists. From Baroque repertoire to contemporary music, and in collaborations with musicians from other traditions in his “Thracian music” project, he has captivated audiences everywhere with formidable precision and intelligence. His new release on BIS is a cross-cultural album entitled “Nomaden” (Nomads), bringing together Queyras and eighteen fellow musicians. It is the story of a journey in which the protagonist (Queyras) “meets” eighteen musicians from many different places and backgrounds, and enters into dialogue with them. Rather than a concerto for cello and ensemble, it is a concertante work for cello and soloists from other musical cultures. An introduction is followed by eleven passages and twenty-five pieces evoking the music of various regions, closing with an epilogue – thirty-eight movements in all.
