From the Grand Fantasia based on Aubers *The Fiance* (1829) to *Reminiscences of Boccanegra* (1882), Liszt paraphrased works by some 30 composers for solo piano, paying tribute to them. It can be described as an act of loveboth for the composers and for audiences who loved opera, the most popular art form of the time. The collection comprises some 60 pieces. At its core are works by Bellini, Donizetti, Meyerbeer, Mozart, and, in particular, Verdi (9 works) and Wagner (14 works).
