In the 19th century, it was primarily thanks to Mendelssohn that the works of J.S. Bachwhich had previously been largely overlookedwere revived; however, Schumann, who lived during the same period, also held a deep affection for Bachs works and was strongly influenced by them. In his later years in particular, Schumann revisited Bachs works, and In 1851, he revised the orchestration of the *St. John Passion* by adding a trumpet part, and in 1853, he undertook various other experiments, such as adding piano accompaniment to unaccompanied violin and cello pieces. Furthermore, in 1843, the Schumanns acquired a pedal piano (also known as a pedal flgel, or a piano with a pedalboard). This was intended for performing Bachs organ works at home.
