Bruckners Unsung Pupil: Poland Was Home to Such an Interesting Composer.Paul Karo (18591914) was a composer born into a wealthy Jewish family of industrialists in Wrocaw. Although he studied under Bruckner at the Vienna Conservatory and was influenced by him, his introverted nature and the fact that he had no need to promote himself for financial reasons meant he passed away without leaving a lasting legacy. Both of his two string quintets remain unpublished. The First was composed in 1893, after he returned home from his studies in Vienna, and immerses the listener in a world of beautiful melodies and rich emotion through traditional techniques. The Second String Quintet, composed 12 years later in 1905, displays a novelty reminiscent of Mahler and Richard Strauss, captivating the listener.
