Originally, a series of Savard’s recordings were released on the ASTREE label (later, Savard himself launched ALIA VOX and released new recordings as well as an LP edition of F. Coupland’s Viols, the great masterpiece of Savard’s ASTREE debut, recorded in 1975. Its sound, which the late Tetsuo Nagaoka famously described as “number one in thickness, abrasiveness, and luster, sometimes to the point of being insistent,” is also a major attraction. Savard, who was in his early thirties at the time, and two other virtuoso players of the same generation give a wonderful performance filled with a sense of tension.
