At the American Musicological Society conference in November 1981, he made a groundbreaking announcement that some of Bachs vocal works were performed with a single singer per part, and this Mass in B minor was recorded shortly thereafter. Performed by a 20-piece orchestra and a vocal ensemble of eight, including soloists, this interpretation offers a markedly different impression from conventional performances of the Mass in B minor; however, its chamber-music-like sound beautifully complements Bachs polyphony, resulting in a performance where the musics inherent beauty is brought into even sharper relief.
