Two great composers who fell victim to historyand are now undergoing a remarkable reappraisalare being brought back to life by a new generation of Polish musicians.Young musicians from their homeland are performing piano quintets by Laks and Weinberg, two composers who endured great hardship due to their Jewish heritage, survived, and later lived in Paris and Moscow, respectively. Although dated 1967, Rakuss work is actually an arrangement by the composer himself of his String Quartet No. 3 from 1945, making it a contemporary of Weinbergs piece. Rakus had miraculously survived Auschwitz at the time and incorporated Polish folk songs into this composition.
